Phinisi or Pinisi are a type of super cool Indonesian sailing vessel that date back to 1906. In the early 1970’s they were actually the largest commercial sailing fleet with thousands of these ships contacting all corners of the Indian Ocean. How cool is that? Nowadays they are almost all motorized but the traditional shape and construction remains the same. We saw a bunch of these in service for both cargo but also decked out to move tourists around to different dive spots. It is becoming more and more difficult to obtain good timber. As a result, builders have either started to use shorter and shorter timbers resulting in compromised hull structure or physically moved their building sites closer to jungle areas like south and East Kalimantan.
